Lead in Drinking Water is rare, but when it occurs it can be very serious. There is no safe level of lead. Children 6 years and under and pregnant women are the most at risk. You can protect yourself and your family from lead in drinking water by doing the following things:
Let the water run
Let the water run from the faucet for 30-60 seconds before using for drinking or cooking. Especially if the water had not been on for 6 hours or more. Be especially careful if you have a lead service line, you may have to let it run a few minutes longer.
Use cold water
Using cold water for drinking, making food, and general consumption use. Cold water is better as it releases less lead than hot water.
Test your water
In most cases, using cold water and letting it run a while before use will keep lead levels low in your drinking water. To be sure if your water is safe, get it tested. Contact a Minnesota Department of Health accredited laboratory and get a sample container and instructions on how to submit your sample. This site will help you find a lab: https://eldo.web.health.state.mn.us/public/accreditedlabs/labsearch.seam.
Treat your water
If you get test results back that indicated a high level of lead in your drinking water, consider getting a water treatment system for your drinking water. You can find information about water treatment systems at: https://www.health.state.mn.us/communities/environment/water/factsheet/hometreatment.html.
