Do you have Voles in your yard? I discovered hundreds of little runways just beneath the snow that Voles were using to traverse my yard. Now, if your trying to sell your home this spring a potential buyer will definitely turned off by the Vole Trails. Some words of advice on Voles. First of all they won’t kill the lawn. They make it look awful until the grass comes back in, but they won’t kill it permanently. Second, they can be removed or exterminated with a variety of methods. This article from Spruce gives some great insights on how to identify Voles and how to get rid of them. How to deal with Voles in your yard
So you have Voles in your yard. It looks bad, but it will pass. If it’s really bad wait until the grass comes back to get your house listed on the MLS. Be sure you wait until the ground is firmed up and then gently rake the Vole trails up and dispose of the clipings. If you have serious bare spots you can sprinkle a grass seed fertilizer mixture in the bare spots and after the first nice rain your trails should fill in. If your potential Buyer is really looking at the yard, explain it’s just temporary from the Voles and switch their attention to something else positive about the house. Maybe the new landscaping or the 30 year roof shingles, Gutters, anything that keeps them from focusing on the yard. You can also use humor to defuse the situation, by saying something like, we do have an abundance of wildlife in the neighborhood. Invite them inside promptly so they don’t linger on the yard. Explain it’s just temporary till the spring rain gets here.
